Kavala – Philippi: a crossroads of histories and cultures

One of the most important archaeological sites in Greece is the archaeological site of Philippi, which is located only 15 kilometers from the city of Kavala. But what was the original name of the city? And why did it get the name Philippi? The city after the battle of Philippi, as it is known, became an important Roman colony. Paul the Apostle passed through the city a little later, establishing the first Christian community on European soil.

It was therefore one of the most important administrative, commercial and financial centers of the wider region. Buildings such as the theater, the famous Basilicas, the Octagon are waiting to be discovered. Before our departure, a walk in the city of Kavala with its great history is a must. Different names, an old town and important monuments tell their own stories especially during the Ottoman rule.
